The best-selling flat bean in Europe, this scrumptious variety offers large, bright green pods with absolutely indescribable succulent seeds. The white seeds are widely considered the most flavorful of all, but you must grow it and taste for yourself! Smeraldo is a tall, very vigorous plant that reaches 4 to 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide. It sets masses of long, straight 8- to 10-inch tasty pods. Direct-sow after all danger of frost, and for best harvest, keep sowing at 3-week intervals until late spring. For fall crops, begin in late summer and continue until a month or so before first frost date. Support the 4- to 4-foot vines on a trellis, tower, or poles spaced 3 feet apart.
